In 2024, 17 tuskers were recorded.

Tuskers are male elephants that grow tusks. Only a small share of Sri Lanka's male elephants carry tusks, so each death shrinks a rare group — and tuskers are sometimes targeted.

In 2024, 17 of the 388 wild elephants that died were tuskers.

More tusker deaths mean the tusked gene line becomes even rarer, and the loss of famous individuals is felt nationally.

Fewer tusker deaths suggest better protection of these high-risk animals.

No safe number; the goal is zero avoidable deaths. No rating is applied.

Tuskers are a cultural symbol in Sri Lanka and a sign of the health of the elephant population.
