If the country produces goods and services worth about USD 84 billion in a year, that is its nominal GDP — the size of the whole pie before slicing it per person.

A larger GDP generally means more income, jobs and government revenue. Measured in dollars it can jump or fall simply because the rupee strengthened or weakened, so read it alongside real growth.

A falling dollar GDP can reflect a genuine recession or simply a weaker rupee. During the 2022 crisis, dollar GDP fell sharply as the rupee depreciated and output contracted.

There is no single healthy level for the size of an economy; what matters is steady real growth and rising income per person. No status rating is applied to the level itself.

GDP is the headline measure of economic size. Debt, deficits and trade are all measured against it.
